White Orb
The silent vessels holding the stolen souls of a dying humanity.
In the context of Nier Replicant lore, the term 'White Orb' most accurately refers to the glowing spheres used within the Gestalt Facility to store the consciousnesses of human souls separated from their bodies. Unlike the Black Orbs that function as currency in the village, these White Orbs represent the preserved minds of the Gestalts, kept safe from the plague while their Replicant counterparts live on the surface.
These artifacts are central to the world's tragedy, symbolizing the artificial separation required for humanity's survival. They appear as luminous, floating vessels within the sterile underground laboratories, pulsing with a faint energy that signifies life still persists despite physical decay.

Lore & Background
The White Orbs are not mere storage units; they are the physical anchors for the human race's last hope. Following the outbreak of the Black Scrawl, scientists initiated Project Gestalt to separate consciousness from flesh. The minds were digitized and placed into these white spheres within a secure facility deep beneath the earth, while Replicant bodies were created to act as vessels on the surface.
Over time, however, the separation proved unstable. The White Orbs began to degrade, causing the stored memories to fragment and fade. This decay mirrors the corruption affecting the Shadow enemies on the surface, revealing that the soul cannot truly exist without a body for long. The facility itself becomes a tomb of light, where thousands of glowing orbs flicker like dying stars.
In Their Own Story
Nier stood before the great wall of containment, his breath fogging in the cold air of the underground. Thousands of them floated in silence—pale spheres suspended in magnetic fields, each one a person who never knew they were already dead. He reached out, not to touch, but to feel the hum of their existence. One orb pulsed brighter than the rest, a flicker of recognition that made his chest tighten. It was a memory, trapped and waiting for a vessel that would never come.
Reader's Guide
These artifacts do not function as player equipment or currency in standard gameplay. They are environmental and narrative objects found primarily during exploration of the Gestalt Facility.
Players cannot collect or trade White Orbs; their significance is purely story-driven, representing the fate of the Gestalts. Interacting with them often triggers cutscenes regarding the truth of the world.
To witness them fully, players must progress through the main storyline to unlock access to restricted areas within the facility. Their visual design contrasts sharply with the Black Orbs used for purchasing weapons and items from the village market.
