Gravity Well
A crushing sphere of dark magic that drags foes into destruction.
In the fractured world of Nier Replicant, magic is a desperate tool used to fight back against the Gestalt and Infected. The ability often referred to by players as the Gravity Well corresponds to the Black Magic spell known simply as Gravity. It manifests as a dark sphere that exerts a powerful gravitational pull, dragging nearby enemies toward the caster before detonating with damaging force. While not a physical artifact, this magical phenomenon serves as one of the most reliable crowd-control tools available to Nier.

Lore & Background
The origins of this specific incantation are lost to time, likely developed during the early wars against the Gestalt when conventional weapons proved insufficient. It represents humanity's attempt to dominate natural laws through forbidden knowledge. While effective, its use reminds the user that they are wielding forces far beyond their understanding, echoing the tragic cycle of magic and disease that plagues the world.
In Their Own Story
The desert wind howled as Nier raised his arm, the air shimmering with violet light. Three Infected lunged from the dunes, their claws bared for the kill. He didn't flinch; instead, he whispered the incantation. A sphere of absolute darkness bloomed in front of him, humming with a low, resonant frequency. The monsters froze as an invisible hand seized them, dragging their screeching bodies into the center of the void before it imploded, leaving only silence and dust.
Reader's Guide
Gravity is acquired early in the game by visiting a Magic Shop, typically found in villages or safe zones like the Village in the Desert. It requires investment in Black Magic stats to be effective, as higher levels increase pull strength and damage.
Mechanically, casting this spell creates a stationary sphere that attracts enemies within range. This is crucial for grouping scattered foes before using area-of-effect attacks like Fireball or Thunderbolt. However, it consumes MP rapidly, so managing resources during long battles is essential.
Strategically, use Gravity in tight corridors to prevent being surrounded. It also works well against flying or fast-moving enemies that are hard to hit with melee weapons. Be aware that larger bosses may be immune to the pull effect, rendering it purely for damage rather than crowd control.

- The spell visually resembles a black hole, fitting its gravitational theme perfectly.
- It is one of the few spells that can interrupt enemy attack animations due to the sudden pull.
- Early versions of the game had different MP costs for this ability compared to later updates.
