Nier (Gestalt)
The buried soul whose despair became the final enemy.
Nier Gestalt refers to the original human consciousness of the protagonist before the Great Collapse transformed him into a Replicant. While the story primarily follows his artificial body and soul, the concept of the Gestalt represents the lost humanity that was forced underground to survive the Black Scrawl plague. These entities are the source of the Despair Virus, as their repressed emotions eventually corrupted them from within.

Lore & Background
Over time, the Gestalt population succumbed to the Despair Virus, losing their individuality and merging into a singular, monstrous entity known as the Shadowlord. This tragedy is the core irony of Nier's journey: the Replicant fights to save his family and humanity, only to discover that his own original self has become the very thing threatening to destroy everything he loves.
In Their Own Story
Deep beneath the cracked earth, where sunlight never touches, a consciousness drifts in an ocean of static. Memories of a white-haired boy playing in a field flicker like dying embers, quickly swallowed by the crushing weight of centuries of isolation. The silence is not peaceful; it is heavy with the screams of millions who forgot their names, merging into a single, weeping roar that shakes the foundations of the world above.
Reader's Guide
The history of the Gestalt is pieced together through scattered documents found in the ruins of Yonah and the underground colony. Early texts describe the initial hope of the separation plan, believing it would preserve humanity until a cure was found.
Later entries reveal the gradual breakdown of the colony's stability as the Despair Virus took hold. The Gestalts began to lose their sanity, leading to violent outbursts that required containment protocols which ultimately failed.
The final truth is revealed only in the deepest endings: the Replicant and Gestalt are two halves of a whole that can never truly reunite without destruction. The Shadowlord is not an alien invader, but the collective tragedy of humanity's own forgotten souls.
